Montessori Children’s House, founded in 1976 on the East Side of Providence, has consistently provided preschool and elementary children with a quality educational experience in a uniquely caring environment. Our small school provides an intimate familial setting with small classes, accessible, carefully designed materials, and an excellent staff.

Montessori Children's House has a diverse student body drawing from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. There are often international students at the school, reflecting the nearby university communities. An enthusiasm, respect, and tolerance for other cultures is an integral part of the children’s education.

The faculty of the school demonstrates those attributes of gentleness and strength that foster self-reliance and eager learning. There are bilingual staff members who bring the richness of their own cultures and experience to the school. Art, music, dance, foreign language, and wildlife specialists enhance our core curriculum with their expertise. Our school follows the principles of the innovative educator and physician Dr. Maria Montessori. Her belief that the child has an innate desire to learn, given the proper environment, led her to develop methods and materials to stimulate the young child’s natural love of learning.

The basic principles of Dr. Montessori, which we practice, are:

PREPARED ENVIRONMENT The classroom is designed and equipped with materials and manipulatives that maximize independent and organized exploration on the part of the child. The child is free to choose and learn in an orderly environment.
INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING Instruction with concrete materials is given when the child is ready to acquire some particular knowledge or skill. A prime goal is the recognition of each child’s strengths, needs, and individual growth.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT The classroom environment encourages non-competitive, cooperative work and encourages children in the freedom and responsibility of social behavior. Empathy and tolerance for others are emphasized both in the curriculum and the classroom.

"When I founded Montessori Children's House in 1976 I wanted to have the pleasure of setting up a classroom, which had an environment as comfortable as a home in order to provide practical and wholesome activiities for the children (cooking, sewing, gardening, clay modeling and painting). I also wanted the classroom I created to emphasize geography and a solid appreciation for the contributions that different cultures in history have made to the human experience."

- Mary Jane O'Neill, Founder and Director, 1976-2002
